Finding the perfect fragrance can be a daunting and difficult task. Often you have an idea of the type of scent you are looking for but once you enter a perfume shop and find dozens of different aromas swirling around you finding that perfect perfume can be difficult. One way of avoiding this is to create your own fragrance using essential oils. Creating a perfume can be a lot more straightforward than many people imagine; with a reasonable sense of smell and a little experimentation you will find you can create some unique and personal fragrances.
Familiarise Yourself With Essential Oils
The first stage of creating perfumes is to familiarise yourself with the different oils. In order to make a great perfume you need not only to work out how each oil smell but which one of the three note categories it will fit into. Fragrance notes are split into three distinct categories (top, middle and base) and creating a balanced blend of the three is the most important part of perfume creation.
The Base Notes
Each type of note lasts for a different length of time after the perfume is applied. Base notes generally awaken about 30minutes after the perfume is applied and they are the scents that will remain for the rest of the day. Usually these are the rich and earthy fragrances such as vanilla and sandalwood.
The Middle Notes
Middle notes are apparent just after the perfume is applied but they tend to disperse after about an hour. The middle notes pull the top notes and the base notes together and are often floral or aromatic scents such as jasmine, rose, thyme and sage.
The Top Notes
The final notes are those that have the shortest lifespan. Top notes are the sharp initial scents that will hit you as soon as the perfume is applied. These scents usually only last for a few minutes before giving way to the lingering middle and base notes. These are often fruity fragrances like lemon, mandarin and grapefruit.
Creating the Perfume
After you have chosen which essential oils you like the hard part is over. You simple add the combined oils to a carrier solution (usually an oil like jojoba oil) with a ration of 20% essential oils 80% carrier oil. Add this mixture to an ounce or two of pure grain alcohol (or vodka if its unavailable) and leave the mixture to rest. The resting time will vary depending on how potent you want the end product to be. After this you will have your own personal and unique cheap perfume.
If you find making perfume isn't for you many popular designers and cosmetics companies now focus on fragrances (such as
Dunhill Aftershave or
Gucci Perfume) alongside their fashion and makeup lines.
